‘Hair of the Dog’, a wacky expression that comes from a Norwegian folk saying that claims, the best cure incorporates the substance that did the damage at first place. Keeping this Scandinavian wisdom apart, drinking alcohol during the morning hours, surely, is not the right solution for curing a hangover. Instead, there are sets of foods and liquids you can consume to get rid of a hangover.
Headache, difficulty in getting out of bed, sensitivity to light, and achy muscles – are some of the symptoms of a hangover, after a crazy night.
The main reason underlying a hangover is the chemical reactions that happen within you. Your own hormones and the toxic chemicals in alcohol are enough to swirl you around. There is never a ‘one meal solution’ for a hangover. All you can try to do is to restock the body with necessary fluids and nutrients like fructose, vitamins, amino acids and minerals that can help break down the toxins. There are scientifically proven drinks and foods that can cure a hangover.
Ginger or Peppermint Tea
Herbal tea is a perfect remedy for curing the aftereffects of heavy drinking. It’s always better to avoid coffee while having a hangover, as coffee is a vasoconstrictor (a substance that makes the blood cells to swell). Instead, try drinking a ginger tea. Ginger is good for curing nausea and morning sickness. Similar is the case with peppermint tea. It’s a common morning sickness cure for pregnant ladies.
Fruits or fruit juices, such as apple or cranberry, can do miracles in curing a hangover. In fact, it’s the fructose present in the sweet, fruity drink that gives you the energy. It can even enhance your metabolism, thus, helping your body to get rid of all those alcoholic toxins, quicker. Also, the vitamins and the fluid can help your body to rehydrate.
But, it’s better to avoid sour citrus like orange or grapefruit since a glass of mellow fruit can irritate an already sensitive stomach.
Alcohol is diuretic; it pushes the liquid out of your body. It acts on your kidneys, making you pee much more than you take in. It also reduces the production of the hormone, vasopressin, which send signals asking your kidneys to absorb water instead of pushing it out. This can lead to dehydration, causing more serious problems like nausea and headache.
So, grab a bottle of water as the first thing in the morning. Replenish that amount of water lost ASAP!
It will be better and healthier if you can choose alkaline water over the normal water. Alkaline water is rich in various minerals, and is better absorbed by the cells, pushing all kinds of toxins out of your body.
Bananas, Kiwi and Spinach
Blend these brightly colored fruits with some yogurt to a hangover-fighting smoothie. All of these fruits and veggies are rich in potassium, an important electrolyte.
Eggs are a rich source of amino acids like cysteine and taurine. Cysteine breaks down acetaldehyde (a chemical that causes headaches, and a left over when the liver breaks down ethanol). Taurine can help to boost liver functions, helping prevent liver damage.
Oatmeal is one of those complete meals, with plenty of essential nutrients, especially, vitamin B, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Oats can also improve your blood sugar level and neutralize the acids in your body.
Tomato juice contains iycopene, an antioxidant that can reduce inflammations in the body. Tomatoes are also rich in fructose and vitamin C, and is sufficient to give your liver a boost.
